Disaster and Crises
The Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) works to reduce the impact of disasters before they strike.
As Ghana faces increasing risks from flooding, seismic activity, and climate-related emergencies, GRCS focuses on anticipatory action, early warning systems, and community preparedness.
In collaboration with national partners and with support from the IFRC, we lead the development of Simplified Early Action Protocols (SEAPs) that guide early responses to potential disasters. Through stakeholder engagement, community mapping, and training, we ensure that local teams are ready to act quickly and effectively.
Working closely with the ICRC, GRCS also supports communities affected by insecurity and displacement in northern Ghana. Our teams assess humanitarian needs, provide emergency relief, and help reconnect separated families through the Restoration of Family Links program.
Ahead of national elections, GRCS leads emergency preparedness and coordination efforts with government agencies, security services, and the media. Supported by the IFRC Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) and the ICRC, we deploy trained volunteers nationwide to provide First Aid and psychosocial support at polling and collation centres, ensuring humanitarian presence during critical national moments.
We continue to strengthen safety, security, and risk communication measures across our branches, especially in high-risk regions.
Through collaboration, training, and early action, the Ghana Red Cross Society helps communities prepare, respond, and recover, protecting lives before, during, and after emergencies.
