OUR HISTORY
The Ghana Red Cross Society was officially established in 1958, one year after Ghana gained independence. It was formed through the Ghana Red Cross Act (Act 10 of 1958), which gave it legal recognition as a voluntary humanitarian organization.
The creation of the GRCS was inspired by the global Red Cross Movement, founded by Henry Dunant in 1863 after witnessing the suffering of wounded soldiers in battle. Ghana became part of this international family to promote humanitarian work within the country.
In 1958, the Ghana Red Cross Society became a full member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Since then, it has worked alongside the government and other partners to respond to emergencies, natural disasters, and health crises.
Over the years, the GRCS has played a vital role in disaster response, first aid training, health education, blood donation campaigns, and support for vulnerable people across the nation. Its volunteers and members continue to serve in communities, guided by the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Movement, Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality.
Today, the Ghana Red Cross Society remains one of the leading humanitarian organizations in Ghana, dedicated to saving lives, promoting health, and building resilient communities.
